Note: I’m going to split this into two sections: Review and Analysis. That night, the skies open up, rain and feathers fill the air, and Ava’s quest and her family’s saga build to a devastating crescendo.įirst-time author Leslye Walton has constructed a layered and unforgettable mythology of what it means to be born with hearts that are tragically, exquisitely human. Others like the pious Nathaniel Sorrows, who mistakes Ava for an angel and whose obsession with her grows until the night of the Summer Solstice celebration. In a quest to understand her peculiar disposition and a growing desire to fit in with her peers, sixteen-year old Ava ventures into the wider world, ill-prepared for what she might discover and naïve to the twisted motives of others. Ava-in all other ways a normal girl-is born with the wings of a bird. Magical realism, lyrical prose, and the pain and passion of human love haunt this hypnotic generational saga.įoolish love appears to be the Roux family birthright, an ominous forecast for its most recent progeny, Ava Lavender. Many of his novels are, in fact, literary crime novels. The epigraph at the beginning of my novel comes from a Nabokov short story, and while I wrote my first draft I immersed myself in his work. The bad seed here – the worst seed, in many ways, as he is (spoiler alert!) the anti-Christ – is barely present, and yet his arrival looms like a dark hand over the novel, building up an atmosphere of almost unbearable tension as the boundary between the everyday and pure evil is broken down. This fifth child, Ben, destroys the family’s happiness in an inexorable way that is riveting, and heartbreaking.īetter known for the movie adaptation directed by Roman Polanski, this novel by Ira Levin is relentlessly terrifying. The novel centers on a mother who has four lovely children to fill the huge, rambling house outside London she and her husband have stretched themselves to afford, but the fifth child, when it arrives, is a terror: a danger to pets and little kids, an outsider, possibly not quite a human. I read this novel four times while working on my own book, mostly because it’s a masterpiece of storytelling, but also because it is the most harrowing novel of parenting I’ve ever encountered. Here are some of my favorite bad seed novels, all of which I read and reread, as I wrote my debut. Literature is rich with such stories of bad seeds and the threat they pose to their families, their communities, and, in some cases, the world. She doesn’t want to let down her parents, who want her to go into a scientific field, so she grapples with feelings of shame about wanting to pursue a career in the arts. Linh’s talent at painting is especially well written, and that talent is what drives her character development. I like both Linh and Bao-they’re both witty and sweet, with distinct ways of seeing the world through their creative passions. So, yes, on the surface, this premise is similar to Romeo and Juliet (you know, two restaurants both alike in dignity, in fair California where we lay our scene…) but the difference is, this book is fun. However, neither is sure what to do about this-they don’t want to let their parents down, but both are starting to wonder if this old familial animosity can be mended. As they tentatively begin to bridge the gap between them, they start to have real feelings for each other. But when Linh and Bao encounter each other by chance, they get along against all the odds. Linh Mai and Bao Nguyen work at their respective families’ pho restaurants, which have been in not-so-friendly rivalry for years. Since this version is just a proof and not the final version, I won’t quote directly and will keep my comments general. I received an advance reader’s copy (ARC) of A Pho Love Story by Loan Le. Funny enough, this book made me crave ramen. Kafka on the Shore also draws heavily on the ancient Greek tragic myth of Oedipus, immortalized in dramatic form by Sophocles in his play, Oedipus Rex. Kafka on the Shore has also drawn much comparison to Murakami’s other long surrealist works, including The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle. Like Murakami, much of Kafka’s work, such as his short story “The Metamorphosis,” blends unsettling fantastical elements with realism to portray isolated characters dealing with the absurdity of modern life. At the same time, Murakami has also been criticized within Japan for his unconventional style, which draws inspiration from European writers including Kurt Vonnegut and the Czech novelist Franz Kafka. I-Novels typically use a first-person, confessional style, often to take on extremely dark and personal subject matter. Kafka on the Shore is one of many works by Murakami written in the style of the traditional Japanese “I-Novel,” which emerged in the early twentieth century. Murakami employs a distinct form of magical realism that blends elements of the Japanese literary tradition with foreign influences. I personally didn’t have that problem but I can see how some would. That can be a struggle when writing a period-specific piece. Another small complaint was that it was harder to relate to the characters because of the period. They seemed to wander off on their own paths but, in reality, that happens in life sometimes. The one complaint a reader had about the book was that the end was not satisfying because a lot of the characters’ plotlines didn’t have sufficient closure. There were loads of literary references dropped into the book but it never seemed forced or snobbish. Sometimes I think I’m in my happy reading bubble and it will be popped at the meeting, but not this time. (OK, I did.) I was so glad to hear that a lot of the other readers really enjoyed it as well. I may or may not have skipped out on another meeting to come to this book club. Sometimes, I’m overly excited to talk to my book club about a book I liked and that was the case with Rules of Civility. It was the law of the universe or something. Was he still asleep? Was this a fever dream? Because mall Santas were supposed to be old and kind of short and schlubby. He blinked at the vision standing in front of him like a mirage amid the stacks of dusty boxes and crates. Heart thudding from his run through town, Hunter stopped short inside the storage room, the back door to the parking lot slamming shut behind him with a gust of frigid air. As Chloe Wang prepares to leave her University of Chicago campus for a long Thanksgiving break back home in California, she packs a suitcase, turns in her assignments, and hires a fake boyfriend to join her family’s holiday celebration. |
